Given the current pace of technology change, we seem to be under ever-increasing pressure from product vendors to upgrade to the newest, latest version of software. Most software vendors now seem to have major software releases scheduled every six months. This can put a strain not only on you, but also on your finances. Along with JBuilder 7, Borland has introduced another companion product, Software Assurance - but more on that later. I come across two types of developers in my consultancy engagements - those who like to use an IDE, and those who frown on the technology, preferring to use the likes of Notepad (but more likely Emacs!) to produce the Java source, and then some custom build process (often using Ant) - what I describe as a "roll-your- own" development environment - to produce the application. I can see benefits to both approaches, and I've often thoug... (more)

Using an Implementation Model to Identify Packaging Issues

At Rosewood Software Services, we use Rational's Unified Process (RUP) and help many clients tailor it for their use. RUP specifies a number of models, including the Implementation Model, which is used to structure the physical artifacts (or files) within a project. For example, in a Java project the Implementation Model is used to define the project's Java package structure and the files used within the project, including class and JAR files as well as JSPs. Most texts leave the Implementation Model at this point, using it as a simple model of file dependencies. The Implementat... (more)

Turning Technology into Profit

BEA's eWorld Europe rolled into Paris June 25-26 with more than 2,200 attendees. The subtitle of this year's conference was "Turning Technology into Profit." Alfred Chuang, BEA's founder, CEO, and president, in his opening keynote emphasized that for technology to be effective it had to maximize the value that it returned to the business and the business's clients. His view was that for corporations to realize profit from technology they must move to become a distributed, integrated enterprise. BEA has a vision to help this, "... do more with less." BEA wants to simplify the pr... (more)

A Simple ADK for WLI's Business Process Management

WebLogic Integration (WLI) consists of many application components, including a B2B application that manages business-to-business contracts during software conversation. To support the B2B application, WLI has a business process management (BPM) application for connecting business processes together. This used to be marketed as a discrete product, WebLogic Process Integrator (WLPI). The BPM application's ADK requires the application developer to understand the architecture of the BPM application. The ADK has a number of components whose use depends on the state of the workflow a... (more)
